Drug Patch

The skin offers a highly accessible, convenient, and very large surface area point-of-entry for therapies. Existing small molecule products have proven that transdermal drug delivery is a more patient-friendly and preferred method of administration compared to injection and offers the additional benefit of sustained release. Two key trends in the health care sector are cost effectiveness and self-care. Alternative delivery methods such as the IsisIQ™ platform that require minimal patient interaction and offer an attractive value proposition will be well positioned to take advantage of these trends. We believe the IsisIQ patch has the potential to play a role in these significant changes in the future of pharmaceutical development and commercialization.

Isis Biopolymer’s first commercial product is Biobliss, the anti-wrinkle, anti-aging patch. Biobliss™ will participate in the $12 billion US skin care market, and more directly in the $2.7 billion US market for anti-aging and wrinkle treatments. This anti-aging market consists of the sales of high-end creams, serums, and day-spa beauty treatments. Various studies suggest that Biobliss’ primary target customer, women aged 39 to 59 years old (which represents 25 million women in the US alone), is currently spending at least $50 to $100 per month on OTC treatments and with limited clinical efficacy. Furthermore, some of Biobliss’ target customers seek more advanced dermatological treatment and are willing to spend thousands of dollars and endure invasive procedures, such as laser treatments, injections and dermabrasions. These types of procedures are usually performed at a dermatology office, but have recently also been available at spas and day beauty clinics. The Isis anti-aging patch will offer a faster, safe, pain-free and lower cost alternative.
